Most Asian cultures don't make a big thing of please and thank you because it's understood. It doesn't necessarily mean they're not thankful.

This reminds me of a similar pet peeve.  It seems Asian cultures don't make a big thing of 'sorry'.  They say it all the time and its understood that no one means it and n fact most don't even know what the word means.  Some will say it means "I say I am sorry so you will stop complaining to me but I will do the same thing again as soon as you turn away"

Again, not unique to Asia.  This happened to be countless times in Aust, the US, UK, NZ to name a few.  Some more often than others.  People need to learn consequences, no matter where they're from.  The people in my life that count say sorry and mean it, those that don't count in my life I just shrug and move on.
