JJReyes Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 Gambling was permitted during funeral wakes as a way to raise money for burial expenses. It got to a point that syndicates would pay families compensation for using the wake as a pretext for professional gambling. Is this still the practice in the provinces? This would be my preferred exit strategy but with kegs strippers and gunfire.

jpbago Posted December 26, 2013 Posted December 26, 2013 So far, the funeral costs here in NO are 18,000p (pick up, embalming, coffin, deliver to house and set up). Six or seven days of food costs for 30 to 40 people at a time will be somewhat offset by the 24 hour gambling kick backs (5 or 6 tables of mah jong and teung it). The funeral will be on Sunday. I have never seen anything like this before. It is very tiring and stressful for the family. It reminds me of that other tradition here where they whip their backs with chains.
Dave Hounddriver Posted December 26, 2013 Posted December 26, 2013 If a friend or family member dies, we foreigners get to 'help' with the financial arrangements, but when we go the money stops (often immediately) so who pays to put us in the ground?
