Bottled water (the big 20 litre ones), canned tuna, sardines etc, UHT long life milk, cereal, rice, gas cooker, a hand fan and an emergency portable radio with hand crank and mini solar panel that can be used to charge a mobile phone.

or buy a gas/diesel generator  , or a solar power backup off grid.

We have plenty of dry and tinned good supplies  to last 4 days without needing a chest freezer - we really don't buy much frozen goods  so doubt it would work for us.  It's not like it's a regular occurrence so I'll chance it. Each to their own though, as you say!
