President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. suspended classes in public schools at all levels and work in the government in Metro Manila and in the Province of Bulacan on August 25 to give way for the opening ceremonies of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan.

The Memorandum Circular No. 27 signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin on August 15 stated that the suspension of government work and classes in public schools on Aug. 25 is also part of the government’s commitment towards wider involvement and participation in sports promotion and development.

The President also emphasized the suspension of government work and classes in public schools is the government’s effort to provide full support and assistance to the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) in ensuring the safe, orderly, and successful opening ceremonies of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023.

The President however clarified that government agencies involved in the delivery of basic and health services, preparedness/response to disasters and calamities, and/or the performance of other vital services “shall continue with their operations and render the necessary services.”

The President said that the suspension of work for private companies and classes in private schools is left to the discretion of their respective heads. PND

Sports are a priority.  Never mind short, stocky Filipinos are not very good at international competition, including basketball.  We can always import players and call them our own.

Except boxing, MMA, weight-lifting, billiards, but back to the subject, I think some here are missing the point that international competition is about supporting your nation, something far more important than whatever nonsense they'll teach in the public school that day.

There is a simple reason why sports are popular in the Philippines.  Betting.  Watch carefully and you will see wagering happening inside the arena, as the game goes on.

Thats exactly what happens by plan or accident. Endless holidays, endless walang pasok. If you have a pliable uneducated workforce you have workers and less problems. The rich send their kids to schools where there is always pasok.

It was highly indicative of the way schoolkids education was reduced to nothing when the previous president said Children will not go to school when there is covid. That how education is regarded. Those who succeed do so by their own endevour and not by Dep Ed. ...Oh and who currently runs Dep Ed.. ???

In many locations within the Philippines, life is safer and better (subjectively..) due to the reduction of certain types of crime.  As those crime decrease,  the void had to be filled with something.   That something is sports.   Yes it is over the top right now,  but this situation is a vast improvement to the past days of high crime, drugs and other.   The bad is not gone,  but much of it is smaller than before and sports gives a focus for the young eager ones to have a focus and or a dream.

Not everyone is able and has the genetic makeup to do well at academics.

Much rather have over the top sports than some of the other activities that teens would choose...
