No Bob..... you missed it. "IT" in this case is money and I firmly believe that 'if' magnesium' was the actual agent that provided any cardiac or anti cancer benefit, then the BIG vitamin / food supplement companies, who are not under any control of Big Pharma, would be cranking out ads with this or any other study that promoted magnesium over aspirin.

When in doubt.... follow the money or lack there of. No one is pushing the (supposed / implied) beneifits of magnesium over aspirin. WHY?

This would be great news and the FDA does not control the manufacture and sale of magnesium as it does aspirin. The vitamin companies would be all over it.... and they are not. This says a lot.

The FDA regulates what health claims food and dietary supplements can make. I expect it is a very long, bureaucratic and expensive process to get approval from the FDA for health claims. Those selling beneficial supplements don't have the deep pockets to pay for that like big pharma. Thus can not make positive strong claims of benefit when marketing their products.

Statistics and epidemiology studies often are just fancy ways of misleading people since there are a myriad of ways they can be manipulated to get the desired results. Whether motivated by financial gain of corporations, self promotion by researchers or by a desire to manipulate people for their own "social welfare" by government.

Noooooo. That is the point. As long as the manufacturer states something like "Not intended to treat any illness or condition' they bypass all the red tape. This how the 'natural viagra' and many others get to the shelves to be bought. By making no health claims, they go straight to the store shelves. So the ads mention the study results and Just Because We Like You, you , yes YOU can buy this product that makes no health claims, but has the same ingredients as the stuff in the study.

This is a sore point for years and to jeep the FDA away, they worked out the "makes no health benefit claims' statement on the bottle.

The bottom line here is that magnesium has been around and available for 50+ years. IF it prevented heart attacks and colon cancer et al the aspirin claims, then magnesium would be flying off the shelves. And it ain't.

BOC seized smuggled white sugar

By Jennifer Ambanta | Posted on Jun. 03, 2013 at 12:01am | 667 views

The Bureau of Customs (BOC) has seized 1,500 bags of white sugar in three container vans, which were shipped into the country from Singapore and declared as combustion materials, cylinders and air-conditioning machines, the BOC reported on Sunday.

The smuggled sugar, which was valued at P5 million, came from Thailand and Malaysia and shipped through Singapore, a BOC statement said.

“They did not declare it as sugar to avoid the required permit from the Sugar Regulatory Authority. This is a violation of the … Tariffs and Customs Code of the Philippines,” the BOC statement said.

Government lose about P150 billion in revenues every year because of smuggling into the country of such commodities as rice, sugar and oil.

At the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), investigators sued South Korean Sang Jin Lee and Jong Jung Park of outdoor advertising company JS Dream Ad for non-payment of taxes in 2006 amounting to more than P14 million.

BIR officials said the owners failed to settle the tax liabilities despite a collection letter and Warrant of Distraint or levy imposed on the company.

The tax assessment notice became “final and executory, unappealable and demandable after the failure of JS Dream Ad to protest or settle the assessment within 30 days,” officials said.

The company is engaged in outdoor advertising using electronic billboards.

But brown sugar is just regular white sugar with some molasses added back in.  It is not any better.

The Muscovado I bought at SM supermarket lists the only ingredient as pure sugercane juice. This is the Prime Organics brand from the Philippines.

Here is an article about this 2 year old Philippine company building an export market for organic muscovado, rice and coco-sugar.

Sugar is sugar. Brown, white, unrefined, cane. Fruit juice alone, even without sugar is bad for you unless taken in moderation. They did an expose the other day in England. Supermarket fresh orange juice & smoothies had 8 teaspoons of sugar in one serving. More than coca cola. When you have even freshly squeezed fruit juice you are losing a lot of the benefits, you're better off eating it, as when juiced you're loosing out on fibre. Remember, just about anything that ends with "OSE" is sugar. Dextrose, glucose, sucrose, galactose & even lactose which is in milk. It's all sugar & it's as dangerous as crack cocaine:)
