Would all or parts of Mindanao be better as an independent country?

The Manila government is unable and unwilling to govern much of the island of Mindanao. Many areas are controlled by militias, bandits and other armed groups. Would the people living in those areas be better served if a "reasonable" muslim group were to rule them?

Hmmm.....not really a student of world affairs or history but my first thought about your excellent topic was -- would we be better off if the Manila government fell on its ass instead.....he, he.

Jake, you have hit it on the Head. They Forget, like so many other countries tend to do, why? they were Elected, They Look after the Capitol Region Only. They are not just a Manila Government, They were Elected to serve the whole Country, Maybe if they were to Live or spend more time in these regions we talk about they may take THEIR Rose coloured Glasses off once in a while.and see it, for what it is.

Could it be those in Manila are simply playing one group against another including the USA?

In Canada we had a separatist movement in Quebec.  So they took a vote, in Quebec only, to see how many of them wanted to leave Canada.  The vote was just a fraction over 50% who wanted to stay so the issue was put to bed for a decade.  Perhaps there will be another vote soon.

Anyway, has there been a vote among the residents of the Mindanao area who claim they want to separate?  If not why not?

No, Mindanao should not be independent. It is part of the Republic of the Philippines. You would never know it by the way the present president wants to give the Muslims large portions to control.

Most Filipinos are against the BBL  and the ARMM. You cannot appease a crocodile by feeding it.It will just save you for laast, then eat you.

Federalism would never work in the Philippines,  either. While it may work in other countries, other countries do not have the Muslims terrorists running wild with their random acts of violence.
