mogo51 Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 I have been in Pattaya for 8 years, my s.o is Filipino, so it is logical for us to move to Phils, as going back to Australia is just not economically feasible. There are more logical reasons for us to move to Phils and I have been there many times and quite like the place. I will have to adjust to the difference between the two countries, Philippines is clearly behind Thailand overall in living standards, but am doing a lot of research to determine the best location. I am looking forward to the change.
Popular Post Tukaram (Tim) Posted February 22, 2016 Popular Post Posted February 22, 2016 Living in the Philippines on a very tight budget with late night drunken karaoke, barking Roosters and any number of curious challenges? has it all become too much. Wanna just quit? What would you do? Even if you have a "backup plan" can you truly go back? I just passed my 3rd anniversary here... so far so good. If anything will chase me away it will be the noise. When the neighbors get too loud for my solid walls (not too often) I have some earbuds on my iPod and put on a 'white noise' track, of a jet engine. The last 2 nights was the barangay festival, next barangay over, and I had to sleep with the earbuds the entire night ha ha. I went back the US once, for a month... and it all just seemed so hectic. And cold! North Texas in October is not cold... but I was freezing ha ha. Guess I got more used tot he humidity than I thought. Could I move back to the US? Yes. Do I want to? Not yet. I was an HVAC/R tech for 25 years. Had my own air conditioning company for a few years, but preferred the hours and benefits of a government job. I could most likely get my old job back, but I could get an A/C job anywhere. If I were to go back I would rather stay retired, though. So I would have to wait another 3 years... until I actually retire. If anything, I could see myself going back for health reasons. When I get old and falling apart (more than I am now) the free medical would be a good thing to go back to. My wife occasionally shows interest in going to the US so she can work... so we shall see.... One thing I have found is that I am comfortable with me. 'Where' I am is not so important. I was happy in the US, I am happy here. :tiphat: Here is something I put in a blog post about my 1st anniversary. I do not remember where I found it, but I like it. The Two Travelers and the Farmer A traveler came upon an old farmer hoeing in his field beside the road. Eager to rest his feet, the wanderer hailed the countryman, who seemed happy enough to straighten his back and talk for a moment. “What sort of people live in the next town?” asked the stranger. “What were the people like where you’ve come from?” replied the farmer, answering the question with another question. “They were a bad lot. Troublemakers all, and lazy too. The most selfish people in the world, and not a one of them to be trusted. I’m happy to be leaving the scoundrels.” “Is that so?” replied the old farmer. “Well, I’m afraid that you’ll find the same sort in the next town. Disappointed, the traveler trudged on his way, and the farmer returned to his work. Some time later another stranger, coming from the same direction, hailed the farmer, and they stopped to talk. “What sort of people live in the next town?” he asked. “What were the people like where you’ve come from?” replied the farmer once again. “They were the best people in the world. Hard working, honest, and friendly. I’m sorry to be leaving them.” “Fear not,” said the farmer. “You’ll find the same sort in the next town.”
sonjack2847 Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 I am not having second thoughts about the Phills. I am having second thoughts about the place I live it is so noisy and not just at fiesta time. I will be relocating in the near future to somewhere quieter.

Dave Hounddriver Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 My wife occasionally shows interest in going to the US so she can work... so we shall see.... Thats an option, send the wife back 'home' to work and send money while we expats continue to live a happy retirement in Philippines. I know of one retired US Navy guy who does that. He seems very happy except for the couple of months of the year when his wife comes to visit. :hystery:

I find the infrastructure to be about the same except for the cellular coverage. My phone is all but useless for data if I'm not on wifi. Other than that, I've had no trouble with electricty, water, or sewage. Granted, I haven't lived through a rainy season yet.
